Guild News

The Guild’s National newsletter, Guild News, is published quarterly and distributed to members, other subscribers, various art supply stores, and teaching institutions specializing in art programs. It features issues like copyright and legal concerns affecting graphic artists throughout the country and even around the world. It also provides updated information on programs, legislative initiatives, event calendars, book reviews, and other items of national interest. A new feature is pages submitted by different Chapters that highlight their activities or particular concerns. Submission of articles and artwork from members is welcome (subject to editor's discretion). Extra copies of the Guild News are usually available from the National Office. Non members my subscribe by sending $12.00 to: Guild News, Graphic Artists Guild, Inc. 90 John St., Ste 403, New York, NY 10038-3202.

Local Newsletters
Most Chapters publish newsletters focusing on local events and programs, and you are invited to participate by mailing in interesting stories, reprints, artwork, announcements, and notices about your achievements. Chapter newsletters are entirely volunteer-produced so you are welcome to contribute your expertise in production. Display ads and classified ad spaces are often available at a substantial member discount. Call your Chapter to obtain information or to volunteer.

The Graphic Artists Guild Handbook: Pricing & Ethical Guidelines, 12th edition
The Pricing & Ethical Guideline is the industry bible, containing information all graphic artists and their clients need to know (members will receive a free copy). This edition has been thoroughly revised and updated to provide all the information you need to compete in an industry moving at lighting speed. The 11th edition includes:
• The latest market information for nearly every design field.
• Expanded and updated Web site design and development chapter.
• Totally revised chapter on technology.
• More background on how graphic designers work.
• A totally new, in-depth discussion of all types of contracts, which introduces many standard contracts and a few new additions.
• Copyright issues in the exploding global market.
• Updates on recent court decisions and legislation affecting artwork and design.
• Character and merchandise licensing.
• A completely updated chapter on surface design.

Using the Book Effectively
So much information is packed into the Pricing & Ethical Guidelines that readers may miss valuable wisdom in their effort to quickly find a suitable contract or price. We suggest reading the book cover to cover and becoming familiar with issues that affect all disciplines. At the very least, read the introduction of every chapter; it will help orient you and indicate where specific information can be found within each section. Without familiarizing yourself with the background material, it is difficult to synthesize the work descriptions, price information, or contract language.

Once you're familiar with the information in the book and how it's organized, you can rely on it for specific references. For instance, the Standard Contracts chapter is intended to give you and your clients a thorough understanding of your rights and obligations. Before adopting or adapting any of the contracts, make sure you read the new text explaining what contracts are and how you can use them to help your business. Feel free to copy the contracts directly on to your own letterhead, or you can modify them to suit specific needs and circumstances. The Guild's general counsel has reviewed the contract language; we therefore suggest that you do not alter it for "simplicity." Note: Members of the staff are neither authorized nor qualified to discuss pricing or technical questions over the phone.
