Out of Africa

by Mark Monlux, markmonlux.com

Dear Mark,
Many thanks for your most valuable tutorial. I am a freelance food packaging designer in South Africa (Durban) and your costing outline has helped me tremendously.

I have been freelancing for over 9 years, after a long period in design studios aligned to advertising agencies, working jointly on campaigns for household name brands.

As a self-employed person, it's very difficult here to avoid the trap of "working endlessly" while profit shrink. Also, all work is deemed owned by the client once the "workload" payment has been made.

I have recently started to work on illustrative, licensed type artwork (decoration for tin canisters) and have seen clients receive enormous re-orders while I derive no further income from the creative value that has created the good sales.

I would love to purchase the Guild Handbook, and if possible to become a member of the Guild. How would I go about this?

Also, could I perhaps find an agent to represent my work in your country? The customers I work for here all export their products so I am familiar with both your and other international marketplaces.

I have been to New York to visit the 9th Avenue Food Festival with my creative colleagues, and absolutely loved this city. I plan to return as many times as I can for the inspiration it provides.

Kind regards,
Maureen Dua

Dear Maureen,
Thank you for your letter and kind words. I am glad that you found my tutorial useful. To answer your questions:

You can purchase a copy of "The Graphic Artists Guild's Pricing and Ethical Guidelines Handbook" (11th Edition) at either the Graphic Artists Guild's Website or order online from www.amazon.com. I would recommend the latter due to your unique shipping requirements. The cost will be roughly $35 plus shipping. It is a larger oversized soft-back book with over 300 pages of good stuff in it from contracts to business ethics.

Should you decide to join the Graphic Artists Guild, you will receive the handbook free with your membership. You can download a membership form (guildapp.pdf). at www.gag.org/membership

If you do join the Graphic Artists Guild, you will become a member of our At-Large Chapter. This is a large chapter and it includes members who live in other countries such as Canada, UK, Ireland, and Australia. I strongly urge you to email your chapter board members as I am sure they will be useful in helping you establish contacts here in the United States of America.
