U.S. Still Nation of Readers

Despite growing competition from CD-ROMs, audio books, and the Internet, book sales are expected to increase at a healthy rate through the end of the century. Two studies report Americans pay an average of $79.22 for books each year, compared to $72.97 on home videos and $56.35 for recorded music. According to the study commissioned by the Book Industry Study Group, annual expenditure on books is expected to jump to $107.19 per individual in 1999, or $30.8 billion in total sales.
