Tasini Victory Prompts Backlash Contracts!

October 6, 1999 NEW YORK

The Tasini v. New York Times victory means that many artists may be able to collect money from publishers who have used their work in various electronic media without the creator's permission. The National Writers Union warns that "at least one publication (not a party in the Tasini Suit) has this week contacted writers and spontaneously offered to settle up for electronic uses not provided for in the contract with artists." In the weeks to come, many artists and photographers may be receiving similar offers.

The Guild reminds artists that creators are under no obligation to sign retroactive contracts. Keep in mind that anything agreed to now could be establishing industry standards for the future. If you receive a contract you're uncertain about, forward it to the attention of the Contracts Committee for review. And watch the Guild website for updates on this situation.
