DK Holland Wins Walter Hortens Professional Practices Award!

April 22, 1999

Designer/author DK Holland was chosen by Graphic Artists Guild members by a vote of 300 to 136 to receive the 1999 Walter Hortens Professional Practices Award for her over twenty years of dedication to improving the professional lives of graphic artists. Guild members also praised illustrator Brad Holland, the other nominee, for his leadership and commitment to raising awareness of the impact of stock usage on the illustration market. Many voters expressed frustration at having to choose between, as one person put it, "two gifted people who go beyond their own careers to help creatives in general." More comments from Guild members below:

"This is long overdue recognition for someone (DK Holland) who has worked long and hard to further the interests of graphics professionals.

"Brad's leadership is one that all artists need now and should emulate."

"France, England, Mexico, China, but two Hollands? Love both of them. But will you serve Gouda cheese? Debbie is why I first joined the Guild 20 years ago."

"DK Holland's editorials in CA have helped me enormously."

"By virtue of many years of outstanding contributions, I vote for DK Holland. I also think Brad is making an outstanding contribution of service. We need his support and he deserves ours!"

"Both Hollands are important contributors to our industry!"

"It is important for new illustrators to know experienced professionals are raising awareness within the industry."

"Many of DK's visions for the Guild are coming to pass, from 20 years ago. She's earned this recognition." Ms. Holland is among four honorees to be recognized at a gala dinner reception at the Society of Illustrators on April 24. Robert Kanes, Art Director of PCWorld Magazine will be honored as Outstanding Client for enlisting contributors to his publication in the design of a contract, one of the handful in the industry, that fairly compensates artists for electronic usage. And U.S Register of Copyrights Marybeth Peters will be honored with a Special Award for the Advancement of Creators' Rights for creating a spirit of accessibility within the Copyright Office, and for her sensitivity to the needs and concerns of creators.
