August 3, 2000 | For Immediate Release | New York, NY A US Congressional Conference Committee from the House and Senate reached a compromise over the Copyright Office Budget for Fiscal Year 2001 by agreeing to cut the budget by $2.5 million instead of the original $5 million suggested by the House Appropriations Committee. A committee report has been issued on the recommendations but neither the House nor Senate has voted on them. It is expected that the recommendations will pass and the Copyright Office will make up the budgetary difference by using what is called a "no year account". This is an account that Congress allows an agency to establish in order to carry over funds not used from previous years. For the Copyright Office, the funds in this account are comprised of fee receipts and will enable the office to operate at full budget capacity for FY 2001. The Copyright Office extends its appreciation and thanks to the Guild and its members for supporting the office on this issue.
