James Schauweker

May 2, 2003

The Guild is sad to report that longtime member and volunteer, James Schauweker, died on April 27 in Palm Harbor, Florida.

James was a graphic designer and illustrator who started his career by illustrating for the Atomic Energy Commission. He established his own company in 1980, James Studios, Inc., which he operated for twenty-two years. He served on the Guild's National Board for fifteen years, beginning in 1985 as a founding member of the Central Florida Chapter. He spent six years serving on the Executive Committee as member, Vice President of Chapter Development, and National Secretary-Treasurer. He resigned as Secretary-Treasurer only two years ago when he began to suffer a series of health problems.

Past president Polly Law said, "James was a big man, with a big heart, a big soul, and deep beliefs; his death will leave a big hole in the lives of all who knew him."

Past president Jonathan Combs said, "James was a constant steadying influence during Guild meetings. His deep resonant voice commanded attention and respect and his level-headed advice always brought clarity and vision to the process. It was a pleasure to have worked with him and a privilege to have him as a friend."

James was a robust presence on the Guild's Board and loved by all of us who served with him over the years. Thanks James! You will be missed.

Lloyd Dangle
President

-----------------------------

It was years ago when I first met James. This was back in the days when the National Convention was held in the cramp quarters of what was then National Office and you had to enter in single file to fit around the tables. I was a proxy for my chapter's rep. James was very engaging, even to a new squirt like me. The comradery I felt with him while going over issues in a hallway, or during our many other discussions was one of the reasons I later became a Chapter Rep. Hanging out with him at the conventions was a joy because even his dark humor was lighthearted. I remember telling him I did not envy his task as Secretary/Treasurer. He just chortled, "It's not so bad. You just wait and see." I thought he was joking. I am really going to miss him.

Mark Monlux
Secretary/Treasurer
